Understanding Voluntary Benefits:
What is AD&D Insurance?
Accidents are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. That’s why accidental death and dismemberment insurance, often called AD&D, is worth knowing about.
AD&D insurance pays benefits to a beneficiary if you die or lose a limb or your eyesight in an accident. This type of insurance is typically written on as an addition, or rider, to a health or life insurance policy, and will pay benefits in addition to a life insurance payout. Your policy will detail specific amounts that will be paid to you if you lose a bodily appendage or sight because of an accident. The types of injuries covered and the amount paid vary by insurer and package, so, as morbid as it may be, be sure to read the fine print.
